Rauch Extra Large Wardrobes Total Quality

Last month, kicking and screaming I was dragged out to the Rauch wardrobe factory in Freudenberg, Germany.

I consoled myself that I could confirm my prejudices of a company that can’t send my order acknowledgements to the location of my choice and when they get my order they take 6 weeks to deliver.

And there was ample confirmation to be had with lots of expensive equipment of the Wallace and Gromit variety (little gizmos that fill bags with grommets etc). And they are very big – the factory is one third of a mile long.

So result! The recipe was in place that all our slow and inflexible suppliers share. ”Why are you so slow?” – ” We are so big and so clever our computer says no.” Didn’t even need to ask Rauch. A piece of particle board was being processed faster that I could walk along the line, but it still takes Rauch 3 days to make one wardrobe!

So you might ask why we buy so much stuff from this dead slow, inflexible and over capitalised Company?

Well you see there is one problem. Rauch wardrobes are the best. Best choice, best quality and really very clever in their construction. After 100 years of furniture making Rauch does know how to make a wardrobe. Hmm.

The ultimate accolade is that Sharon Morrison, the Princess of Paisley, has a Beech Blitz 3 door and an extra large 2 metre sliding door Imperial. And when she moves house next week they are getting dismantled and taken to her new home. If I didn’t have a fitted wardrobe and encumbered with old JRG furniture that wouldn’t sell, circa 2003, I’d buy Rauch too.

I hear also there is a great new bedroom furniture shop in Paisley (Morrisons Bed Centre) showing Rauch.  It’s even bigger than Princess Sharon’s new bedroom. Might go and have a look for ideas.

In the end it wasn’t a wasted visit and if you get the opportunity to visit Rauch then go. The beer is brilliant. And the autobahn trip from Hahn airport beats go-karting in Clydebank.
